Pick n Pay extends recycling options to online shoppers
By:

Pick n Pay announced that as part of their online shopping service, they will now be collecting plastic bags, plastic containers and batteries for recycling from the homes and business of their online-shopping customers.

Bronwen Rohland, Pick n Pay’s Marketing and Sustainability Director said: “This move once again underscores the fact that Pick n Pay considers the environment in all its operations. Through this one-of-a-kind initiative in South Africa, we are offering to remove any used plastic bags, plastic containers and batteries for recycling when we make home deliveries to customers who order their groceries online.”

Pick n Pay’s online shopping currently offers a home-delivery service operating in all the major centres around the country. Customers can register and shop online and choose a convenient delivery time to have their groceries delivered direct to their home or business.

According to Rohland, this reverse-logistics recycling initiative was initiated as the retailer has an established online shopping business and delivery network, which could facilitate the return, via online shopping delivery vehicles, of used plastic bags, plastic containers and batteries to stores for recycling after deliveries had been made.

In addition, PnP Online Shopping also recently announced a campaign in partnership with Huggies, whereby groceries ordered online will be delivered in recyclable, biodegradable brown paper bags, while stocks last. The campaign is being sponsored by Huggies and forms part of promoting their online shopping special offer, which offers online customers free delivery of their entire order when a Huggies product is purchased online.

Rohland confirmed that the retailer is planning to make a number of changes to their online shopping service in the coming year, and is continuing to research other social and environmental value-added initiatives to compliment their existing online service.
