Designer Jihyun Ryo’s project “Save Food From the Refrigerator” finds ways to store food through a unique combination of design and chemistry.
Her design incorporates symbiosis whereby ethylene gas produced by apples prevents potatoes from sprouting. Her design also makes use of sand for root vegetables, helping to control humidity.
She has developed a series of modern kitchen designs that draw on knowledge and traditions passed down by generations.
Ryo states, “Through the research into the current situation of food preservation, I’ve learned that we hand over the responsibility of taking care of food to the technology, the refrigerator. We don’t observe the food any more and we don’t understand how to treat it.”
This designer truly shows that, by working with what nature has given us, innovative design can help facilitate more sustainable living.
