Last week we introduced a
blog that shows you how to cook with things you'd ordinarily throw away, like vegetable skins and fruit pulp. Egg shells, on the other hand, are not edible - no matter how they're prepared. It doesn't mean you should throw them away though.
Here are our five favourite ways to re-use egg shells and eliminating a little extra waste:
Pest Control
Crushed eggshell deters snails, slugs and other creepy-crawlies. Scatter them around your plants and flowers.
Grow Seeds
Eggshells are biodegradable. Fill with potting soil, add seeds and transplant directly into the garden when ready. Use the egg carton as a seedling pot stand!
Compost
Eggshells in your compost will help add calcium and minerals to the soil.
Coffee
I've never tried this, but apparently popping an eggshell into the coffee filter can cut the bitterness. Both grounds and shell can then be composted.
Cleaning
Crushed egg shells act as an abrasive. Clean things like flasks and vases by add soapy water and crushed eggshells and give it a good shake.
