Battery egg debate
Woolworths delays on egg turn around
By: News team

We were so excited to report that there were progressive moves towards replacing battery eggs in all Woolworths pre-prepared foods. Unfortunately it seems as if there is a further delay due to costs and no immediate time-line has been put forward as to when this situation will change.

Activists and concerned consumers are wondering when Woolworths are going to live up to their claim that "We think our hens enjoy having space to behave like hens should."

The conditions in which battery hens are kept are inhumane and worldwide there is an awakening regarding this practise and what can be done to improve the conditions of these creatures that provide so much nourishment on a daily basis.

Woolworths were going to be the champions in this country and act as a leader in helping to make the shift towards using free range eggs in all their pre-prepared foods. Now they are back tracking and reviewing the situation based on costs. Even if it does cost more how would that be weighed against them acting as industry leaders making them the first supermarket chain in South Africa to offer their customers a true choice on buying food that has been ethically produced?
